The first stop of the tour is Ortahisar Castle, a natural stone fortress, with an incredible panoramic view. Once the “awestruckness” fades, the tour begins.
First on the list, is an old Greek town, Mustafapaşa, where Greeks have left architectural marvels that are all entirely rock-carved or made out of rocks. Most notably, the grand church and “The Medrese” Islamic College. Just next to it, there’s another town waiting to be explored.
When hearing about ancient Turkey’s history, you usually hear how tiny villages expanded over time, but Taşkınpaşa went the other way and became a small, sleepy village instead with well-preserved examples of Ottoman-time architecture.
The next highlights are Soğanlı Village and Valleys. Truly stunning places where a village is located right in the middle of two valleys, and which’s history dates back to Roman times when it was an important monastic retreat place. After Soğanlı, we are heading to Derinkuyu underground city. It is yet another architectural marvel being complete with its own water storage and air circulation systems.
And the best for the last, Pigeon Valley where pigeons have carved nests into magical fairy chimneys. They are also often decorated to attract the birds, as they were and are still helping fertilize grapes used by the local winemakers. Next to Pigeon valley, you will see the local craftsmanship of jewelry and ornaments, as well as dolls, gloves, and socks made by village women for sale.
