Cappadocia Whirling Dervishes Ceremony
Whirling Dervishes Ceremony is not your usual night-out show. For the performers, it is a deep-rooted spiritual performance with each whirl strengthening their religious practice. It is truly an opportunity to see it in such an authentic setting.
Semâ is the name of the whirling dance performed by the disciples of the Mevlâna. Semâ means to whirl round, to dance, to attain ecstasy by means of music.
The center for this sect is Konya, three hours away by driving from Cappadocia. But Every evening there are Dervish performances in Cappadocia.
The Whirling Dervishes in Cappadocia performed at Sarihan Caravanserai twice a day at 6.00 and 9.00 pm. The whole ceremony takes about one hour so and after the ceremony, you are offered ‘Şerbet’, (cinnamon tea) a religious drink. You will get picked up from your hotel in Cappadocia about an hour before, which will give you enough time to look around in the old caravanserai before the performance starts.
At the end of the performance, you will have your Serbet and then you will be transferred back to your hotel.
NOTE: Please respect the performers and do not take photos or videos during the performance. There will be a designated time for taking photos after the performance.

A Spiritual Experience

Live Music
Music plays a major role in the Whirling Dervish ceremony, thus it is performed live, accompanying the “dancers”. The music controls the rhythm and pace, guiding the performers throughout the ceremony.
Sarihan Caravanserai
Caravanserai is an ancient form of a “hotel”. Not only did these places offer beds, food, and drinks, but the visitors were protected against bandits that in those days was a common problem.
The History Behind It
The Mevlevis are also known as the “whirling dervishes”. Their famous practice of whirling is a form of dhikr (remembrance of God) and holds a deep spiritual meaning to its performers.
The religious drink, Şerbet
Ottoman Muslims don’t have a custom of consuming or serving alcoholic beverages, which led to the creation and rising popularity of Şerbet. It has various recipes, but this one has a distinct cinnamon flavor.
